I have been using MyExpatTaxes for several years now and looked obsessively before choosing them, Upwork, google, through friends, everywhere. If you are an expat or have to file a 5471 because you own interest in a foreign corp, and especially if you left the US and didn't realize you should be filing and are several years behind on filing and need to file a streamlined return, MyExpatTaxes is THE SOLUTION. I have found them to be unmatched in price, speed, precision, and response time. The portal makes it easy to upload your forms and get an estimate BEFORE YOU PAY. And their services just keep getting better. 10/10 recommend.

The process was smooth with detailed explanation of everything needed for both Income Tax filing as well as FBAR , much below the rate charged by tax professionals.

The revision to FBAR before filing was well supported by your online support chat person which made the process smooth.

The program was very easy to follow, and the fee was reasonable.

It‘s very helpful that my basic data and things like accounts for the fbar are saved from the last year.
For the most part, whenever I was in doubt, a short information was provided. So for me, it was pretty intuitive.
I also appreciate that I can send everything electronically through the app.

Claude/AI und diese Plattform machten die amerikanische (normalerweise sehr komplizierte) Steuererklärung deutlich einfacher. Ich nahm die Schweizer Steuererklärung bei Claude als Input und kopierte danach einfach die Abschnitte von MyExpatTaxes als "Fragen" raus. Die AI konnte mir so alle nötigen Infos liefern, die ich dann bei MyExpatTaxes eingab. Diese Kombi kann ich wirklich jedem empfehlen. Da ich bis jetzt keine anderen US-Steuerplattformen verwendet habe, kann ich jedoch nicht beurteilen, ob es die allerbeste ist.

Good overall experience. Rapid response, generally professional. The reason for 4 stars is that the tax advisor mistakenly understood I had made a contribution to a Roth IRA instead of a Traditional IRA. This caused some confusion and made me slightly question the thoroughness of the review. In the end this was sorted out to my satisfaction.

It's much easier to use than the famous software—especially since English isn't my first language—and the price is a huge plus!

EDIT: After I posted this review, MyExpatTaxes followed up and fixed the issue manually for me. Accordingly, I am updating this review from 1 star to 2 stars.

This is my 2nd year using MyExpatTaxes, and unfortunately it is my 2nd one-star review.

This time, the tax software and human customer support calculated my taxes incorrectly, and when I pointed out the error, customer service insisted:
"My colleagues have already confirmed that this was the correct entry.

Please note that you are in the Base DIY Plan; we cannot provide personal assistance or review of your return. If you need more information, you will need to upgrade to the Reviewed or Premium plan using the link below, and have one of the Tax Professionals review your case and entry and provide replies specific to your tax situation"

In other words, I need to upgrade my plan to fix the error.

My specific error is on Form 8889 for HSAs. I was only HSA-eligible for part of the year, so my Line 3 amount should not be the full year amount. However, customer service insists I am wrong, but says they cannot explain why I am wrong unless I upgrade my plan.

My plan is to file my incorrect tax form, and if the IRS audits me, I'll show them my email exchange with customer support to show why I could not file the form correctly.
