Primordial Radio Avis 

This is a subscription radio station; why does that matter? Because there are no braindead adverts every five minutes. The music is just for the listeners. The wide variety of bands and music, the humour, the personal touch; all the things that I listen for. Have heard so many new and interesting bands from around the world, made friends; and especially during this last year of pandemia, felt connected to a community. On a daily basis it makes me smile so much. A soundtrack for your life.
We can't all like the same things, if something speaks to you; let it.

Great new rock and metal music mixed with classics and new to me tunes plus down-to-earth DJ's. No ads which is amazing plus a lovely community attached. The website is easy to navigate and the fav and vote up/down button is a great idea.

Primordial Radio is just awesome. It's what all other alternative radio stations promised to be but never delivered.
Such an incredible mix of music and so much new music too. I have discovered so many new bands by listening and new friends! You are never alone at a Primordial event!
Yes you have to pay, but it's not much and it is worth every penny!

Primordial radio plays a fantastic selection of rock and metal, old and new, all day every day.
Not only that but they are clearly fans of the genre themselves.
They also care greatly about the community and value it above all else.
This is truly the home of rock and metal.

This radio station is to blame for me falling in love with new music again, for going to gigs again.....

After about 25 years old I stopped listening to anything new and just went back to the music of my youth time and time again..

At 42, I've been to more gigs and listened to more new music in the last 3 years than in the last 15....

Why can't we give 4.5? 4 seems a bit miserly.
I've been listening to Primordial since the start, and I've backed it twice.
Ad free radio works, despite what other stations would have you believe, and it's worth paying for.
I've discovered amazing new bands and music, as well as older stuff that had passed me by. I don't like everything that's played, but I don't expect to; and there's bits of content which don't work for me. But you can't please everybody all the time.
Give it a try, who knows - you might like it. And it won't cost you a penny to try :)

First of all, a radio station you have to pay to listen to ?!! .... What The Flying Fish is this all about !

Well, I believe it’s well worth it. The subscription fee is well worth not having to listen to the tired old format of ‘a rock music’ station.

Primordial plays a wide range of rock n metal from across all of the different genres of modern day rock music along with an impressive back catalogue playing older tracks that wouldn’t necessarily get air time.

Importantly a lot of emphasis is concentrated on new music released by bands that are of now, although the old classics do get an airing they are not constantly churned out over and over again.

No Adverts, No Traffic reports, in fact none of the usual radio format.

The presenters, I think, are top notch. All bringing their own particular personality’s to the table.
Inane chatter, serious topics, sometimes a rant or two and a real tongue in cheek attitude.

Fiercely Independent and refreshingly different 👍

Free trials are offered so give it a listen, if it’s not for you well your free to walk away. If you do like it then you’ll be well pleased with how different from the norm it is.

Found these guys on Teamrock Radio, followed them to Primordial, invested in both capital fundraising rounds, have listened to them on average probably 10/12 hours a day for around 8 years in total, I go to as many events as I can and I wear their merch with pride. It's either pretty good or I'm certifiable 🤷‍♂️

You may not pay for commercial radio with money but you will certainly pay for it with your time.

Commercial radio has to sell time to advertisers. Time that they know they have your attention. To achieve this, they play; largely the chart music and maybe the odd rarity. But regardless of what they play, the music is heavily restricted and generally family friendly. Lots of great music can not or will not be played based purely on the artist, chart relevance, lyrical content and /or subject matter.

NON OF THIS APPLIES TO PRIMORDIAL RADIO.

If you’re after amazing and varied music from entire back catalogues of Rock & Metal musicians. Regardless of how the music may be perceived.

If you want to hear music how the artist’s wanted it to be heard.

If you want to hear artists from all over the world. (Great music isn’t necessarily just in English!)

If you want to hear DJ’s that have freedom of speech; more than any FM or DAB station.

If you want a level of consumer interaction like no other station.

If you want a physical community; not just Facebook/Twitter friends! With regular events (COVID allowing).

Then Primordial Radio will welcome you into its family with open arms.

Primordial Radio isn't for everyone and that's ok.

I didn't listen to radio for years after Team Rock went under but I avidly followed these guys on social media but I didn't quite understand why it would be worth my time paying to listen so I got myself on a free trial and immediately remembered why I missed hearing such friendly voices on the radio. There have been some changes since I started listening and the growth of the station has been great to watch and play a small part in. Although my friends aren't fans, my partner paid for his own subscription after attending one of the events and understanding how much being around like-minded people improved my mental health.

Not every presenter is going to be your favourite, not every song is going to be your favourite but the fact that the station is listener led and listeners can help shape the station is a bonus cuz at least you know they'll listen to your idea!

I may not listen everyday but when I do it's like a lovely warm hug and I'm looking forward to attending events again post-COVID :)

I’m a 2x investor in this business so this is not an entirely impartial review but humour me…
Is it worth the subscription fee ?
Yes it is, of-course not all will appeal but just wait for the next track.
No adverts & emphasis on new music, so worth the fee right there.
The presenters are a mixture of pro’s & amateurs, I suspect most will figure which is which.
They are enthusiastic & knowledgeable around the rock/metal genre but most importantly all are entertaining.
Does it need to improve ?
Yes of-course, the guys running the station are acutely aware of this.
If you like rock/metal join the community & help shape the future of “radio”.
3 stars as there is always room for improvement but nothing ever achieves perfection ( apart from Black Sabbath).

Finally a radio station that plays rock and metal as the artist intended, regardless of any swear words. You can tune anytime and hear Slayer, Linkin Park or Nine Inch Nails. Plus more new music than you can shake a stick at.

What do you mean no adverts? How am I supposed to know what PPI or Accident chasers to go for? Where should I get my building supplies from? I mean, I'm not a builder but I always used to know!
And all this new music you keep playing? Are you trying to promote new talent and introduce new sounds? Can't you just play Classic Rock on loop?
Then there are DJs who enthuse about their job and genuinely care about the scene and the people in it. Why aren't you getting your tips from certain football club owners like you should do?
Finally, the community that has been created means I can no longer claim to be the 'only metalhead in the village'. B@@stards.
Anyway, almost 4 years of this and think the next 100 might be the last.

The best rock and metal radio station there is. Great presenters playing great music and all without ads. They also focus strongly on new music so you won't get the same old tried playlists other stations subject you to.

On top of that they organise amazing events which are always fun and have developed an awesome community that means if you're part of the fam you never need to go to a gig alone.

Primordial Radio. Honest, Open, Fun and Friendly. More than just a radio station, it's a community of individuals dedicated to spreading a message of hope to rock and metal music lovers that "you are not alone". Great merch, too!
Is it worth £6/month? Absolutely - in fact it's probably the best six quid you'll spend this month, and it won't rot your teeth or make you fat!

I have been a listener since before day one. I love the station, it has introduced me to some many new bands and music. Many of the DJ's feel like old friends now. Adverts drive me mad and primordial does not have any. Sometimes the jingles can get a bit annoying if you listen as much as me (most days 10 hours) but they are nothing compared to Ads.
I love the community and the events the station put on.
The station is determined to be ethical it lots of different ways. A clear example of that is when you start a free trial you do not have to enter any payment information.

I know that some people do not understand paying for radio but it well worth it.

I stepped back from listening to radio & music for quite a while for “reasons”.
A mate recommended giving Primordial Radio a try when they launched back in 2017, so after 4 years, here’s my review.

In a nutshell :
- Music cranked to 11, ads dialled down to 0 (there are none!)
- Banter, and sometimes rants are great between the varied artists & music played, mostly new music not the same old rock and metal names on repeat.
- Having the ability to pick up and change a shows theme,based on current events, listener stories, life! adds an interesting dynamic
- Ethics and ethos behind the Station are great and everything is up front (even the mistakes)
- The community is very supporting and engaging
- Events are worth going to, very welcoming and a great laugh - even if you don’t know anyone there.
- 12 Hours of listener requests even Friday leads to a very varied playlist
- Large range of podcasts available as well, from interviews to environmental stuff.

It seems I’m making more use of Spotify with Primordial Radio acting as a gateway or should that be musical concierge?, to discover more new bands and artists, rather than the “automated suggestions” lists that normally come up.

Paying for radio is an unusual concept, Rock and Metal is a HUGE genre so how do you choose what to play and everyone knows what “they“ like and has their viewpoint on what fits the bill.
These are some major obstacles to overcome but Primordial Radio is trying something new and for me at least, it works.
Worth taking the free trial to see if it tickles your fancy !
4/5 on the principle that no-one is perfect !

Having been part of the community from the very beginning of the station first just starting as a Facebook page, the strides made and ethos of Primordial Radio really have made them a formidable force for good for the Rock and Metal Community. They have a great policy of 50% new music every hour and it doesn't have to be new music from established bands, Pete does a great job of giving time for bands who don't even have a massive following yet. The DJ's have changed over the years from the core group of Moose, Dews and Pete to a wider group of volunteer DJ's who are passionate about the music they play and the topics they discuss. Yes it can lead to a 7-8 minute link (not very 'radio' like) but that for me is part of the charm, who wants a programmed robot presenter with little genuine interest and just going through the motions. I cannot speak higher of the events they put on as well (outside of COVID times), everyone is approachable. Give the station and try and if you are open minded about Rock and Metal Music and not wedded to commercial radio presentation styles you might find you love it!

Worth every penny!

As with anything there will be bits you love, and bits you’re not so keen on, but that’s the same with everything.

It’s a great station with a cool community and dedicated presenters. I’d encourage everyone to at least give it a go, you even get a free trial!
