I had a brilliant experience with John Charcoal and would highly recommend them, especially to anyone with a more complex mortgage situation.

As a single first-time buyer in London, my case was not straightforward, and I had previously been rejected by high street banks. Alvin was excellent throughout the whole mortgage process. From the start, Alvin took the time to understand my circumstances properly and explored lots of different mortgage products to find the right option for me.

What really stood out about Alvin was that he did not just look for the easiest or most obvious option. He took the time to understand my circumstances, compared different lenders and products, and explained why some options would or would not work. Alvin also helped present my case in the best possible way, which made a huge difference after being rejected by high street banks.

Alvin’s knowledge of the market, including non-standard and specialist mortgage providers, made all the difference. He explained how the different products worked, what my options were, and why certain lenders would be more suitable for my situation. His persistence, knowledge, and clear communication gave me confidence at a time when I thought getting a mortgage might not be possible.

I also want to mention Kathrine H, who was incredibly helpful in chasing solicitors, keeping things moving, and helping with the additional bits that come with buying a home. Her support made the process feel much less stressful.

Holly Grant was also fantastic in helping me arrange the right protection, including life insurance, income protection, and critical illness cover. She explained everything clearly and made sure I had the right cover in place for my circumstances.

Overall, Alvin and the wider team at John Charcoal were knowledgeable, supportive, and persistent from start to finish. I am very grateful for Alvin’s help in getting me onto the property ladder and would happily recommend him and the team to other first-time buyers.

Is the 2nd or 3rd time having used JC as a broker and again have offered well considered options and best advice, based on our previous requests and different wants each time. We've just completed our mortgage with John Charcol and the service we received was excellent. Kathryn has been exceptional: she clearly explained our options and the process, and helped us choose the best product for us. John Charcol were to arrange a mortgage loan and they encouraged me to take out a bridging loan. They charged me fees for both their services and assured us that the loan would go through but they failed us. We spent money on: lawyer, architect, arranging of planning permission and application for usage change for premise, interest on personal loan we had to take out for start-up costs, and Castle Trust bridging loan cost that the broker lined up for us to meet part of the purchase cost, broker fee, surveyor cost for assured property etc. Lost a lot of money but they stopped returning our calls and emails.
I would not trust their services.

I don't know what the rest of the team at John Charcol is like, but Tom Hale was superb in getting a much better rate than I was being offered elsewhere and in navigating the process smoothly. Moving house is often very stressful, and my mortgage requirements as a 62 year old were complex, but Tom made it happen.
