Extremely disappointed

Extremely disappointed – £68.75 cancellation fee on the same day for a policy that was never needed

I purchased a motorcycle insurance policy from Motorcycle Direct at 3pm today because I was in the process of buying a motorbike. Unfortunately, the bike purchase fell through shortly afterwards, so I immediately contacted them to cancel the policy.
Despite the policy having been in place for only a few hours and no cover actually being used (as I never took ownership of the bike), they charged me a £68.75 cancellation fee.
I understand that companies have administration costs, but charging nearly £70 for cancelling on the same day – before any meaningful cover was provided and right at the start of the 14-day cooling-off period – feels excessive and unfair. This was not a long-term policy that I was terminating early; it was a purchase that became redundant within hours due to circumstances beyond my control.
This experience has left a very sour taste. I would strongly advise others to be extremely cautious when buying insurance from Motorcycle Direct, especially if there's any uncertainty around the purchase of your bike. Check their cancellation terms very carefully before committing.
I will not be using them again.

It seems impossible to speak to anyone !!!!!!!
I have a question that is not answered by their portal and the online chat in inpenetrable as all the portal says is "message us" but doesn't tell you how to message them.... absolute crap service

Called today to re insure my bike

Called today to re insure my bike. Elaine was extremely helpful and sorted out my no claims bonus saving me some money. Didn't rush on the phone and made everything clear.

Absolutely shocking service..

Absolutely shocking service... their text chat in customer portal hasn't worked for weeks, only number to call them on is a claims line, if you try that they just keep putting the phone down on you! I am going to report them to the insurance ombudsman and insurance regulatory board, honestly- just don't even contemplate insuring anything with these clowns.

No email or telephone numbers given, portal doesn't work reliably.

No email or telephone number is provided for help and everything is supposed to go through their "customer portal" which DOESN'T WORK on many web browsers. This makes it incredibly complicated and frustrating to communicate with them. I will switch to an insurer that can answer an email or pick up the phone.

significantly higher price on renewal and chat is a tiresome process

They want to charge me an extra ₤100 on a renewal which is a +25% increase.
I go on the chat and wait over 30 mins then they come on and close the chat when I don't response in rapid time.
No quick way to reopen chat and have to go through the *insert expletive* chatbot.
You think I've got time to be waiting and wasting it all day for you guys...
It's all good though, I'll go with another company that is already ₤150 cheaper.
Great way to treat customers... Peace out.

We are sorry that you feel that we did not meet your expectations, and your comments will be taken into consideration. Our wait times were higher than normal after the bank holiday weekend. We can see that you did come through and spoke to one of our agents who managed to get a better rate for you. Just to confirm, if the new policy is not taken up with us, your policy will lapse and confirmation, along with your no claims bonus certificate, will be sent to your portal for you.

Terrible Chatbot only service

For many policies there is no telephone helpline- just an imcompetent andd very slow Deadchat, operated by an illiterate chatbot. Thus every action is too slow. If MC direct can't be bothered to speak to their customers- I can't be bothered to keep them afloat. They've just lost business after 20 years.

When you come through to our live chat, the initial few questions are via a chatbot, and once those initial questions have been answered, the chat does go through to a live agent who would have been able to assist you. Now escalated to a debt company because final payment had gone to portal .

When you did cancel your policy on 18.03.2026, we can see the agent did explain to you the breakdown for the fees and charges, and that the outstanding balance would be available on your portal. A reminder was sent via email on 26.03.2026 that there was an outstanding amount. Looking at the portal for CRS, we can see they have received the outstanding amount.

Horrible company to deal with

Horrible company to deal with, hidden charges and zero flexibility. Passed a debt to collection agency one week after I cancelled my policy and did not let me know.

We can see that you did cancel your policy, and notification was sent out via email on 23.03.2026 as your preferred method of delivery to confirm that the policy was cancelled and that there was an outstanding balance. We can see that the email was opened on the same day. A follow up email was sent and opened on 31.03.2026, which is when you contacted us. Thanks for making the payment, and I can confirm that the balance is no longer outstanding.

Robbers normally wear masks

I was charged over £75 to cancel a £120 policy less than a month into the policy. Didn't send me an email to tell me, just sent me a general notification email. They then wanted to charge me another £25 for not paying it on time, again the reminder was just a gerneal notification email. No phone number to speak to anybody, all done with live chat. Wouldn't like to use them for a claim if this is how good they are cancelling a simple policy.
