Bought 5 plants but only came home with 4 (left one on til as the woman was really confused) emailed them to arrange to collect and my email has been ignored !!! Not good practice

Otter Nurseries Plymouth
Otter Nurseries Plymouth. Bought 4 different fusias from here all hardy all did not survive winter. Also purchased 4 fusias from another garden centre also hardy and all servived. Will not visit Otter Nurseries again. Selling substandard plants.
Everything overpriced
Everything overpriced, restaurant dirty (chips under table) yukky coffee and argumentative counter assistant. Catch penny shan't be returning.
Appalling Otter Nurseries Wincanton…
Appalling Otter Nurseries Wincanton still selling compost containing Peat. All Gardeners know the horrendous damage peat extraction does to our environment and our Planet and most gardeners stopped using peat years ago. Yet Otter Nurseries is still selling the stuff. It is inexcusable that a garden centre continues to sell any brand of compost with peat.
In addition, to this, their service is hopeless. No one offered to help with lifting - completely useless. It is the last time I’ll be going.
Disappointing visit.
Went to Lymington Otter Nurseries having spent loads of money over the last couple of years. for what was intended a nice few hours out for a light lunch and to spend some garden gift tokens that we had been presented with. Looked at the cafe menus intending to go in later Then after looking around the Christmas area and felt it was a bit uninspiring , seemed all a bit impersonal and lacking any real atmosphere ,the impression given was stick a high price on any item that can be sold to make a profit , that included clothing ,confectionary , etc. Christmas 'stuff' all racked on shelves, made in the far east etc! the blackout overhead made it too dark to see prices etc on items. . Before intending to go in cafe and wanted to use the loos , so took a direct route only to be shouted at by a member of staff that we were not allowed through that way (no signing to say otherwise.) We used the loos and left disappointed , then we decided to go back to a smaller independent garden centre nearby that continue to treat customers with respect in the old fashioned way!
Really great experience
Really great experience - beautiful car, just as described, and Christian really went the extra mile to make sure I understood everything and knew what I was doing. A v high quality service.
Rude beyond belief and a very upsetting call.
Spent nearly £50.00 on trailing plants for hanging baskets. How thrilled am I to have lobelia trailing UP the basket sides and 30cm tall petunias poking toward the sky. Yes, they were labelled trailing and yes, they are upright and yes, they look ridiculous. More to the point, I am unexpectedly very upset about this as I have been deprived of an annual pleasure and with all this Covid going about I actually feel my little bit of happiness has been taken away from me. So I e-mailed Otter and very pleasant I was, too. Got a call back from some plant woman and the conversation went something like this. It is for gist purposes only and not verbatum. I also can't remember the exact cost of the plants but you'll get my drift.
'How can I help you?'
'Oh, well, I sent an e-mail and....'
'Yes, I've got it here. What do you want us to do?'
(Taken aback at lack of immediate apology,) 'Oh! Well, I don't know! The ball is pretty much in your court!'
'What did you buy?'
'Lobelia and......'
'Was the lobelia in the 10 pack or the 6 pack?'
'Um.....'
'Well, were they plug plants?'
'Yes, but.....'
'So that's £3.99. What else?'
'Well I bought 4 of the lobelia, not 1....'
'So that's £15.96. What else?'
'Well I bought 4 petunias......'
'£3.99 12 cm pot or £1.99 smaller pots?'
'Um, I think the pots were about 5, maybe 6 cms....?'
'So that's £7.96. That's £23.92. What else?'
'Geraniums.'
'How many?'
'2.'
'What size pot?'
And so it went on with verbena and calibrachoa. She was officious, she sounded like she was utterly hacked off she was having to deal with me and she made me feel like I was something she'd trodden in and that I was really being very tiresome. Moreover, I had no room to expatiate as she continually interrupted me, she didn't mention the fact that the plants had been wrongly labelled and she showed no empathy for my upset which I had mentioned in the e-mail. She went on to tell me that I 'couldn't expect them to pay for compost' and having totalled the PRECISE amount I had spent, she told me that 'They would not refund THAT amount' so it 'Would have to be store credit'. I was so lost for words by this stage that I failed completely to counter her, not that I had any opportunity. I wish to goodness I had. Unbelievably rude with not a word of apology or offer of a good will gesture. What sort of company condones this outrageous throwaway attitude? I actually felt genuinely dismayed that I was being spoken to like this; not simply the intonation, but the fact that my core expectation of politeness has been completely decimated and I therefore have to question my own judgement. And do they not care that they are selling mislabelled plants? Have they become that far above themselves they think their name is synonymous with quality so that's alright then? To add insult to injury, the plants are actually incredibly poor quality to boot and judging by some of the reviews on here, Otter's name seems to be rapidly becoming synonymous with rude staff and inferior plants. Oh, how the mighty fall. Let that be a lesson to you.
Very poor customer service.
We recently purchased a six seater patio set from Otter Nurseries, at a cost of over £1,000. When delivered there were two cushions missing. We contacted the Nurseries immediately and were asked numerous times if we had checked the box properly. We explained we had. The staff member continuously questioned our ability to have checked the box and clearly doubted our honesty regarding this matter. After a very long and difficult rather insulting conversation we were reluctantly advised we could collect two cushions from the warehouse. Once again we were met by staff who questioned our honesty and truthfulness about the two missing cushions.
After this upsetting episode, we wrote to the manager of Otter Nurseries expressing our disappointment at the attitude of the staff. Two weeks later we have not received a response from the manager, hence our review.
The attitude of the staff involved and lack of response from the manager smacks of complacency and unprofessionalism. Over the last two years we have spent approximately £2,500 on various garden items and in future we will shop elsewhere: totally unacceptable customer service. Be warned ! This store takes the money but does not address complaints.
STILL NO DOGS ALLOWED …GET WITH THE TIMES!!!
I was going to visit the store in Ottery-St-Mary today, since I’ve recently moved house with a large garden I was planning on buying not only garden furniture but a variety of plants large and small, I had quite a big budget to spend but unfortunately I saw on their website that they don’t allow dogs so I went and spent my money elsewhere.
I really don’t know what makes them so special as I called every other large and small garden centre in and around the area and they all allow dogs…aside from inside restaurants and cafes which is perfectly acceptable.
If you’re going to ban dogs you should ban children also, the one and only time I briefly visited your store last year I was in and out within 10 minutes because there were children unattended running riot, one of which rammed in to my elderly mother knocking her flying. I thought I’d give it the benefit of the doubt and try again only to find out you don’t allow dogs!
I think you really ought to get with the times, lots of people own dogs and don’t want to leave them at home if they’re planning on spending quite a few hours within a garden centre. Reading through the reviews I can see that quite a lot of them mention this so maybe it’s time to review your rules.
Poor quality plug plants and very expensive
Purchased some begonia plug plants £1.49 each. Some have died and the rest are doing very poorly. Visited Trago Mills, where they are selling exactly the same brand of plug plants (Kindergarten) for 89p. I bought the same variety of begonias which are doing really well.
Really cannot recommend Otter for their poor quality plants and extortionate prices.
After more than 30 years of being a…
After more than 30 years of being a regular and maybe even a valued client, we were refused refunds on some plants that were guaranteed. The inference being that they were not their plants. The place has lost its charm, there is nothing more frustrating than being quoted as "its company policy". Left never to return because we were made to feel like thieves.
Wont be going back.
Lovely setting and good prices and friendlystaff. But the service is very slow. They got 2 coffees wrong and took well over 20 mins to get some milk to our table. We walked out in the end!
Terrible experience at Otter Nursery, Wincanton.
We have used this Otter Nursery in Wincanton, Somerset regularly over the past few years and were fully intending to purchase a large number of plants and one or two garden statues following the completion of work to our garden. We arrived today to collect a planter that we had ordered online. We were asked by a member of staff to drive our car down a small access track and were then taken to see the planter - just to check that it was the right one. I said that I would go and pay for the item and my husband, with the help of the member of staff, was going to put the planter into the car. When I returned after paying the gentleman we had spoken to was nowhere to be seen so we decided to put the planter into the car ourselves. We were then approached by another member of staff, a stocky young man with dark hair, who demanded that we tell him what we were doing there. We explained what had happened but this appeared to have little or no effect on this individual who reiterated that we shouldn't be there and started to inform us of the company's health and safety policy. He then demanded the name of the person who had told us to park there. We didn't know the chap's name so this officious individual starting phoning people and asking each person, in turn, who had shown us down to this area. We felt that he didn't believe us and continued to try and explain that we had been told to drive our car down there and then had been taken beyond the gate to look at the planter. We were putting the planter into the car when yet another member of staff arrived and asked if we were all right. The officious individual then started to tell this new victim the saga. My husband had had enough by this time and made a comment that the other man wouldn't stop going on about it. The culmination was that the officious individual slammed his hand against a sign on the gate several times before marching off. At this point my husband and I both agreed that we didn't want the planter having been spoken to in such a way. We unloaded it from the back of the car and my husband drove the car to a parking space whilst I went to obtain a refund. I asked to speak to a manager and I have to say that the lady who spoke to me was really lovely, extremely professional and couldn't apologise enough. As I pointed out to her, not only was the officious individual rude but that, as customers, we did not need to be witness to him phoning different people in order to find out who had told us to park where we had. I feel sorry for the other staff at this garden centre who have always, until now, been so helpful. Having had an experience like this, we won't be returning.
